What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

No doubt you would find hundreds of definitions for SEO, I would define it as optimizing a site so that search engines would be able to find, categorize, index and rank the site.

Search Engine Optimization comprises of following steps

1)      Keyword Analysis

This is the first step in SEO. Based on the business profile of a site, various keywords that are relevant to it are analyzed to make sure important ones are not dropped out and then begins the optimization process once the keywords are finalized.

On keyword Finalization, next step is analyzing and modifying on page factors wherever required.

for exchanging ideas and knowledge.

Off Page Search Engine Optimization Techniques (Off Page SEO)

Once On-Page optimization is performed on a website, the next step in SEO is off Page Optimization.

As the name suggests, off page optimization refers to optimization techniques applied without altering any on-page contents or parameters of the website.

Off Page optimization techniques include

1)    SiteMap Creation:

A Sitemap is a file which contains information about all the internal links present on a website.A Sitemap is created so as to ensure that we have included all the links which we want the search engine to index. The format for sitemap is XML. Even HTML or simple text format can work.

Parameters of an element of a Sitemap are as follows:

  1. URL : Contains the link of the page that we are talking about.
  2. Priority: Mentions the importance of the page on a scale of 0-1.
  3. Change Frequency: Mentions the frequency of change of page content wise.

Thus a sitemap is nothing but a roadmap for a Crawler which would guide it on how to travel across the site when the each engine accesses it, what should it looks for and how frequently should a link be looked for by any search engine.

2)    Sitemap Submission

Once a sitemap is created in a format acceptable by search engine, submission of this into various search engines is the next step performed. By this, we make sure that the search engine indexes the site.

3)    Robots.txt:

This file a gatekeeper of your web content and yes, search engines do obey this gate keeper.Robots.txt is created so as to direct the search engine about what is it allowd to crawl and what not. So if you do not want something to be visible in Search engines, you can make good use of Robots.txt

4)    Link Building:

The most important ingredient of off page optimization is Link Building.

Link Building is the process of exchanging links with other relevant sites in such a way that you put a link to their site and expect one from them. Search engines rely on references in a very similar way like when getting admissions to Universities, Recommendation letters are relied upon.

There are loads of Link exchange sites available in the market. Link building can also be done by manually searching for relevant sites and requesting their webmasters for a link.

Link building definately is a slow and gradual process.

5)    Directory Submissions:

These are another source of inbound one way links. Lot of Directories are available wherein you can list yourself in the respective category.
